E. Carlyle, Prosperous Farmer and One of the Leading Citizens of County. Died at Home Near Lumberton Monday Night – Funeral Yesterday Mr. J. E. Carlyle, a prosperous farmer and one of Robeson’s leading citizens, died while sitting up in a chair at his home about 4 miles west of Lumberton Monday night at 10:45 o’clock. Death was due to paralysis of the heart. Deceased was 63 years and 4 months old and had been in ill health for several months. However, his condition was thought to be improved up until about an hour before his death. He is survived by six children: two daughters – Mis Flora, who lived with her father, Mrs. J. M. Powell, who lives near the Carlyle home; and four sons – Mr. Alex. Carlyle of Raleigh, Mr. Zeb V. Carlyle, one of Robeson’s selectment stationed at Camp Jackson, Mr. J. A. Carlyle, who lives near the old home and Mr. Rowland, who lived with his father. All the children were at home for the funeral, which was conducted from the home yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. L. E. Dailey, pastor of Raft Swamp Baptist church, of which deceased was a deacon and leading member. Interment was made near the home. The grave was covered with beautiful floral designs. Mr. Carlyle was one of the oldest Masons in the county and was buried with Masonic honors. Hundreds of people representing all sections of the county, attended the funeral. In the death of Mr. Carlyle Robeson loses one of its best citizens. He was prominent in church work, in politics and all progressive movements in his section for many years.
