Correspondence of The Robesonian Pates, March 22 – Catherine Chavis, died at her home near Pates, N. C., March 14. She had been confined to her bed for quite a while, in fact she had been unable to be out for about eight months. She had a complicated trouble. Heart failure is thought to be her last trouble. Mrs. Catherine Chavis, better known by the name of “Kate”, was the oldest daughter of the late Thomas Sanderson of the same section. Mrs. Chavis was 69 years, 8 months and 12 days old at her death. The funeral was conducted by Rev. L. W. Jacobs, assisted by Rev. C. E. Locklear, at the Harpers Ferry Baptist church, of which the deceased had been a consistent member for 39 years. Mrs. Chavis formerly belonged to the Methodist church at New Hope. She was a Christian of the finest type of character. “Truth” decency and right living” was her motto. She loved her church and Sunday school and never seemed to tire while she was serving them. She always held her pastor in high esteem. She leaves a husband and a daughter, Mrs. Robert Jacobs, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn. Her testimony and life reveal to them the bright reward the Father has for those who serve him, and Mrs. Chavis gave service which brings reward. She will be greatly missed by her home and community. She was interred at Harpers Ferry cemetery on March 15. There was a vast throng of people to attend the funeral and burying, which was simple and very impressive. May her life have its effect in the community, in the way of love, decency and truth. Our sympathy is hereby extended to the bereaved family.
