Mr. Zach Clewis, aged 78 years, died Saturday night at his home in East Lumberton, death resulting from the infirmities of old age. Deceased is survived by his widow and several children. Interment was made in the family burying ground 5 miles south of Lumberton today at 11 a.m. Transcribed by Terry Johnson Additional Comments: Zachariah Clewis, was the son of Lewis Clewis and Mary Ivey who moved to Dooley, Georgia and are buried there. He was born: 06 Aug 1843 in Robeson County. Zachariah Clewis was a veteran of the Confederate Army in the War of the Northern Aggression. He was a member or the North Carolina Troops 46th Regiment, Company A, and was actually at Appomattox when General Lee Surrendered. He married Joanna Louisa Phillips, daughter of Jordan L. Phillips and Helen Mariah Storm. Children were: Christopher “Kit” Columbus Clewis, Julia Mae Clewis, Wright Woodberry Clewis, (husband of Mary Lee Pitman, daughter of Jordan Lee Pittman and Mary Jane Israel)James Lee, Jacob Anderson, Annie Bell, John Franklin, Capers Leo and Alfred Rowland Clewis.
