CURRIE William J. Currie Passes In Maxton ... Was Oldest Ruling Elder in Southern Presbyterian Church. Maxton, March 16. – William J. Currie, oldest in both age and service of the ruling elders of the southern Presbyterian church, died at his home in Maxton this morning. Mr. Currie was 83 years of age, and had been in failing health for several months. He was the son of John Calvin Currie and Margaret Keasey Currie and was born in Robeson county in 1864, only 18 years old, he enlisted in the Confederate army and served to the close of the Civil war. In 1867 he became a ruling elder of the Sandy Grove Presbyterian church and continued in that office until his family moved to “Shoe Heel” now the city of Maxton. Ten years later he was an elder at Center Church the nearest church to Shoe Heel in those days, and when the Presbyterian church of Maxton was built he became an elder there and served faithfully in that capacity as long as his health permitted. In 1876 he married Miss Catherine Smith of Wakulla; and of this union there were five children: W. M. Currie, of Maxton; Dr. D. S. Currie, of Parkton; Mrs. L. W. McKinnon, of Maxton; Mrs. W. V. Vick, of Wilmington, and Mrs. G. L. Troppman who died about two months ago at her home in Pittsburg, Pa. Mr. Currie was at one time post-master of his home town and a member of the House of Representatives. For many years he has been a member of the Masonic order and was a Past Grand Master. Funeral services will bo conducted at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon.
