Davis Claimed By Death William M. Davis, 75, retired farmer and resident of the Barker Ten-Mile section for the past 7 years, died at his home Thursday at 3 p.m. A Spanish- American War veteran, he had been a patient at the Veteran’s hospital in Fayetteville for some time since he suffered a stroke three years ago. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Barker’s Methodist church, of which he was a member, by the pastor, Rev. O.L. Hathaway of St. Pauls. Burial will follow in the McLean family cemetery in Cumberland county. He was a native of Cumberland, where he was born on July 12, 1868, son of the late William and Mary Jane Springs Davis. Surviving are his second wife, Mrs. Sue Powers Davis; five children by a former marriage to the late Mrs. Annie Grady Davis – William Davis Jr. of Erwin, Mrs. G.B. Graham of East Lumberton, Mrs. Arch Suggs of St. Pauls, Mrs. Harlowe Taylor of Lumberton, R.2, and Miss Eva Davis of R.1; 2 brothers, Thomas of Charlotte and George of Fayetteville; 5 sisters, Mrs. W.C. Stroupe and Mrs. Lock Davis of Charlotte, Miss Mamie Davis of Winston-Salem and Mrs. George Townsend and Miss Maggie Davis of Fayetteville; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
