James McDowell Fleming, 68, widely-known and beloved minister who died in a local hospital Saturday morning of pernicious anemia. Former pastor of numerous churches in Robeson and neighboring counties, Mr. Fleming was at the time of his death pastor of the Smyrna Church, Lumberton, R. 3, and Back Swamp Church in Aerial's Crossroads in South Carolina. The East Lumberton church , one of his former charges was organized by him. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dr. C. H. Durham, pastor of Lumberton's First Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. I. P. Hedgepeth of Lumberton, Rev. E. A. Paul, pastor of East Lumberton Baptist Church, Rev. W. T. Baucom of St. Pauls Church, Rev. L. P. Leppard or Maxton, Rev. Troy Jones of Red Springs. Interment was in the Hollywood Cemetery. Former School Teacher Mr. Fleming succumbed to anemia after receiving 8 blood transfusions since Christmas. He would have been 69 years of age next March 3. A native of Conway, S. C., he attended high school in the Ashpole section of Robeson County (now Fairmont) and also attended Wake Forest College, but to a large extent he was "self educated" through extensive study and reading. He had been a school teacher for 31 years. A proponent of the Old Time Religion and literal Scripture interpretation, passages of which he delighted to quote, and was an advocate of the "blue back" speller sas a fundament tool of education. For many years he had conducted a column entitled "News and Comment" in The Robesonian, and he also reported on numerous deaths among members of his congregation. Surviving members of the family are his widow Mrs. Susan Phillips Fleming; one daughter, Mrs. George Sessoms of Lumberton, R. 5; a brother I. M. Fleming of Conway, S. C., a sister, Mrs. A. L. Jordan of Winnsboro, S. C. Among the other churches of which Mr. Fleming had been pastor were: Zion's Hill, Beulah, Cedar Grove, Singletary's Crossroads, Raft Swamp and West Lumberton Baptist.
