E. Floyd of Fairmont Passes Funeral Services for Fairmont's Grand Old Man Will Be Held This Afternoon at 4. Was Confederate Veteran, Former Recorder and Prominent Citizen. By Phone to The Robesonian. Fairmont, May 23,-- Mr. A. E. (Gus) Floyd, prominent retired teacher, former recorder and Confederate veteran, died at his home here Wednesday night at 10:15 after an illness of 2 weeks following a light stroke of paralysis. "Uncle Gus," as he was familiarly known, was Fairmont's grand old man. He was loved by everyone. He was Fairmont's last Confederate veteran. He entered the service when 17, serving throughout the Civil war in the 17th North Carolina regiment. He fought in many hard battles. The Gus Floyd chapter U. D. C. was named in his honor. He was a noble Christian, and though feeble for the last few years, he attended church often. It was while attending church on May 5 that his last illness began. Mr. Floyd was recorder of the Fairmont district for several years, and his decisions and judgments were always considered most wisely made. "Uncle Gus" celebrated his 87th birthday March 8. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Baptist church of Fairmont today at 4 p.m. by Dr. T. H. Plemmons, pastor, and interment will be made in the church cemetery. Surviving are his wife by second marriage and the following children by his first wife: Messars. FA., PR., DY., GE., and FO Floyd. Misses Christine and Dinabel Floyd, all of Fairmont. Mrs. Eva W. Floyd of Lumberton, register of deeds of Robeson county is a daughter in-law. Mr. Floyd is also survived by a number of grandchildren and by 2 great-grandchildren Additional Comments: From the contributor: Augustus Evander Floyd (Gus) was born May 8, 1842 and died May 22, 1929. He married Sep 15, 1870 to Adelia Melvina Pittman. She was born Dec 21, 1852 and died May 3, 1913. Augustus Evander Floyd was the son of Francis Lewis Floyd Jr born Aug 2, 1801 died Sep 30, 1856 and Christian Williams born Aug 1, 1801 and died Jun 4, 1892.
