Deceased Was Well Known Citizen---Interment in MeadowBrook. Mr. Irvin Jenkins, whose critical illness has been mentioned in recent issues of The Robesonian, died at his home, Caldwell street, at 2: 45 Monday afternoon. He was one of the best-known and most highly respected citizens of the county. He was 83 years old. He is survived by his wife. The services were conducted by Rev. Dr. W.B. North, pastor of Chestnut Street Methodist church, of which deceased was a loyal member, assisted by Rev. Dr. G.E. Moorehouse, pastor of the Presbyterian church. A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the funeral. The remains were laid to rest in Meadowbrook cemetery. The floral offerings completely covered the grave. At the funeral "Nearer My God to Thee", "How Firm a Foundation" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye", all favorite hymns of deceased, were sung. The pall-bearers were: active---Messrs. H.B. Jennings, A.T. McLean, John S. McNeil, J.R. Poole, George L. Thompson and Dr. John Knox; honorary---Messrs. Joseph Prevatte, Sr., Q.T. Williams, L.H. Caldwell, C.B. Townsend, A.W. McLean, J.H. McNeil, and Alf H. McLeod. A number of Confederate veterans, many of them comrades of deceased during the Civil War attended the funeral. Deceased was born January 25, 1835, and was therefore in his 83rd year. He lived in Robeson all his life and was one of the best known and most highly respected of the county's citizens. He served throughout the Civil War and was ever true to this country. A few years after the war he moved from his farm to Lumberton and engaged in the mercantile and turpentine business, and was for many years one of the town's most successful business men. He was for some time associated in business with the late Mr. J.H. Caldwell, the style of the firm being Jenkins & Caldwell. At that time this was one of the leading firms in the town. Mr. Jenkins retired from active business a few years later and since that time has spent his life in quietude. He was a devout Christian and was admired by all who knew him. Deceased was twice married. His first wife was Miss Carrie Townsend. His second wife was Mrs. Nettie McLean, a sister of the late Rev. P.R. Law, at one time pastor of the Lumberton Presbyterian church. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Davis of Wilson's Mill, this State, Mr. M.N Inabinet of McColl, S.C., Mrs. Robert Chapman of Cheraw, S.C. and Mr. and Mrs. N.W. Jenkins of Fairmont. Additional Comments: Irvin Jenkins was born Jan 25, 1835 and died Jun 11, 1917. He married first to Carrie Townsend born Mar 17, 1842 and died Sep 2, 1901 and second to Mrs Nettie McLean. Irvin Jenkins was the son of Cornelius Jenkins born Apr 4, 1795 died Sep 5, 1843 and Nancy Mitchell born Jun 2, 1797 and died Sep 16, 1881.
