Monday, October 23, 1933 Mrs. Mary Catherine King, 75, died Friday about 3 a.m. at her home on McLean Street, following several days’ critical illness from a prolonged period of ill health with high blood pressure and complications. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p.m. from St. Pauls Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. R.R. Grant, officiating, after which the body was taken to her old neighborhood at Oak Ridge cemetery, where burial was made in the family plot beside the grave of her late husband, A.B. King, who preceded her a number of years. Deceased was most highly esteemed among her wide acquaintances who knew her for her good qualities and her death will be learned with deep regret by all. She is survived by 6 sons and 3 daughters: Messrs. Clayton of Columbus, Ga., J.T. and L.A. of St. Pauls, Alton of Baltimore, Md., Harvey, of St. Pauls, R.F.D., Dr. D.D. of Lumberton, Mesdames Geo. Klarpp of Shannon, D.B. McNeill of Lumberton, Miss Sallye King, who lived at St. Pauls with her mother. Others surviving Mrs. King are a brother, Mr. W.P. Barker or Lumberton, a half-brother, Mr. N.A. Townsend of the Ten Mile community, and 23 grandchildren. The many lovely flowers were borne by granddaughters and nieces of deceased. Other ministers officiating were: Rev. Mr. McMahan, Presbyterian minister, Rev. Mr. Mastellar, Baptist minister, of St. Pauls, Rev. J.B. Thompson of New Bern, a former pastor of deceased, and Rev. B.B. Slaughter of Lumberton. The choir was made up of members of the Methodist choirs of St. Pauls and Lumberton, which sang several numbers at the church and grave. A solo, “Golden Bells”, was sung by Mrs. M.F. Townsend of Lumberton. Pallbearers were: active – Messrs. Kelton Broadwell, LeRoy Townsend, C.M. Barker, Hal Harrington, Ruffin Powers, Dr. M.F. Townsend; honorary – Messrs. James M’White, S.B. Culbreath, E.R. Franklin, D.E. Seamon, J.M. Butler, C.C. Harrington, J.E. Regan, D.C. Regan, J.F. Powers, N.A. Mercer, T.J. Allen, W.A. McCormick, L.S. Britt, L.H. Townsend, A.E. Howard, P.J. Caudell, J.H. Powers, Drs. C.T. Poole and L.J. Moore. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mrs. Fannie King and daughter of Fayetteville, Mrs. D.S. Klarpp, of Shannon, Mr. Darina Herring and family of Aberdeen, Mr. and Mrs. J. Abner Barker of Salemburg, Mrs. Clark and daughter, Alice, and granddaughter, Miss Craven, of Clarkton.
