Fayetteville Observer, Wed March 29, 1843
MURDER.-A shocking murder was committed in the upper part of Robeson county on 
Thursday evening last on the body of Neill Livingston, by a stage driver named 
Peter Gaters.  Both the parties had been drinking, when a quarrel arose, and Gates 
struck Livingston with a stick and a spade, from which blows he died on Friday 
morning.  Gates made his escape South.
