Robeson County, NC - Obituary of John Lewis, 1925 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MR. JOHN LEWIS Another Confederate Veteran Passes Was Prominent and Successful Citizen By Mrs. H. G. Inman Fairmont, Oct 15.-- Mr. John Lewis Civil War veteran died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bonson Nye, Thursday, October 8th. at 3 o'clock. He suffered a light stroke of paralysis Sunday two weeks before he died but it was not enough to keep him from attending church service at Baltimore, at which place he was a regular attendant. When he was only 18 years of age he ran away and enlisted for service in the war between the states, where he served gallantly until the end. After coming home he settled down to farming and running a saw mill, at which he was very prosperous. He was a pioneer in his community and a man always for the good and uplift of his community. Had Mr. Lewis lived until next March he would have been 81 years old. He was married to Miss. Mary Easterling. Seven of the children born to this union are living.----- Mesdames--Sallie Stubbs, Spurgeon Floyd, Bonson Nye, Arthur Bullock, and Frank Floyd, and Messrs. J. D. Lewis and J. M. Lewis, all of Fairmont and vicinity. Mrs. Lewis died about 3 years ago. A brother, Mr. Burge Lewis, and three sisters, Mesdames Frank Pittman and Jetter Pittman of near Fairmont, and Mrs. Emory McNeil of Lumberton, survive. 35 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren survive. The funeral was conducted at the home Friday afternon by his pastor, Rev. J. E.
