Robeson County, NC - Obituary of Charity Lake Leggett Lewis, 1925 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Good Woman Succumbs to Pneumonia and Complications Funeral Attended by Large Crowd. Fairmont, May 16.----The community was made very sad Tuesday May 12 when it was learned that Mrs. Lake Lewis had passed away late in the afternoon. She had been sick for several months, and although her death did not come unexpected, it was a great shock. The immediate cause was heart trouble followed by pneumonia. She was the youngest daughter of the late Jacob and Charity Leggett, and was 52 years of age. On Jan. 25, 1883 she was married to J.G. Lewis of Fairmont. To their union were born ten children, all of whom survive except William B. and Ralph Dawson. Her husband preceded her just 12 years to the month. She joined the Baptist church of Fairmont when a young girl, and was loved for her beautiful Christian character. As her pastor remarked while conducting the funeral, she was not a woman of society and cared nothing for the fashions of the world, but always helping those in need. The funeral was conducted at the home Wednesday at 4 p.m. by her pastor, Rev. J.E. Lanier, and interment made in the family cemetery, a large crowd attending. The foral offerings were numerous and beautiful, many from a distance. They completely covered the grave. The following children survive: Mrs. C. H. Sealey, of Proctorville, Misses-- Mattie and Mary Belle, Messrs-- Jacob, Fitzhugh, Douglas, Edward, and Walter of Fairmont. All were at her bedside when the end came. Also two sisters survive, Mrs. E.C. Nye, of Orrum and Mrs. C.G. Floyd of Barnesville. The following nephews acted as pall bearers: Day Meares of Cerro Gordo, Carl Nye of Orrum, Dewey Floyd of Barnesville, Row Lewis of Pembroke, Charles Floyd and Crawford Ratley of Fairmont. Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs.Katie Tiddy and daughter, Sarah of Red Springs, Mr. and Mrs. Lacy John of Lumber Bridge, Mrs. Addie Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Meares of Fair Bluff, Mr. Day Meares of Cerro Cordo, and Mrs. Martha Lewis and family of Pembroke. Charity Lake Lewis was the youngest daughter of Jacob Leggett born Jan 10, 1823 died May 6, 1883 and Charity Inman born Apr 17, 1830 and died Mar 26, 1903. Charity and John Gaston Lewis are buried in a family cemetery on Leggett road in Robeson County.
