Red Springs Comet 04/20/1892
DEATH OF WILLIAM McMIL-
LAN.
 
   On the afternoon of April 14th, at his
home near Red Springs, suddenly, of
hemorrhage of the lungs, died on his
78th birthday, William McMillan – fa-
miliarly known, to distinguish him from
several others of the same name, as
“Corn Billy.”
   Thus has passed away one of our
oldest, most widely known, most high-
ly respected, and best citizens.
   Mr. McMillan, though extremely
modest and retiring, all his long and
honorable life pursuing the avocation
of an industrious, frugal, and success-
ful farmer, was a man of more than
ordinary intelligence and force of char-
acter.  He was a close observer of men
and their actions, and a sharp, shrewd,
critical judge of human nature.
   Straight as an arrow, towering some
6 feet 4 inches in height, plainly dressed
but with scrupulooouuus neatness, for
many years of venerable mien and ap-
pearance, he attracted attention wher-
ever seen.
   The large crowd that stood, subdued
and recerent, around his grave, repre-
senting the entire community, notably
the unusual number of colored people,
attested with unmistakable signifi-
cance the esteem and affection of his
neighbors who knew him best.
   Mr. McMillan’s tender, thoughtful
and loving devotion to his wife, and
only daughter, and to his aged and sore-
ly afflicted sister, was touching and
simply beautiful a crown of glory and
of honor to the kindly, courteous, Chris-
tian gentleman that he was.
   In the absence of his pastor from the
county, solemn and appropriate funeral
service were conducted by the Rev.
W. B. Harrell and Rev. Mr. Pittman,
of the Baptist church.      J. R. M.
