McPhail Resolutions of Respect. The subject of this sketch was born June 30, 1842 and departed this life Sept. 10, 1911 being, therefore, sixty-nine years, two months and twenty days old. He served about three years in the Confederate war having enlisted as a private volunteer in Co. H, 40th Regiment, and was faithful to every interest entrusted to him. On Dec. 7, 1871, he was married to Miss Mattie Branch, a sister of our townsmen, Messrs. J. A. and S. A. Branch. The union was honored with eight children as follows: Messr. Alex and John H., Misses Belle, Emma, Sarah E., N. J. and Mrs. M. J. Sanderson of Wagram, and Mrs. Henry Taylor of East Lumberton. Mr. McPhail was the embodiment of simple faith, and he disdained all wrong doing. He was one of the few men who would suffer to be wronged rather than to do wrong. The 15th Psalm beautifully describes him. He loved the church which was, to him, the place where God’s honor dwells. He hated formality. To him the statement of Christ in John 4:24 – “God is a Spirit: and they who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth,” meant exactly what it states and all other kinds of worship were at a discount. In the organization of our East Lumberton Baptist church, Feby. 18, 1907, he came with his family from our Lumberton church, as charter members. He was soon ordained a deacon and served as faithfully as a man could serve. He was present at all the meetings; preaching, prayer-meeting and Sunday school until his health gave was a few months ago. He was an inspiration to his pastor, who always felt that he could count on him for any duty within his power to perform. The board of deacons who survive, viz: W. O. Blake, D. S. Wilkins, H. H. Abbott and Oscar Britt hereby attest the esteem in deceased was held in the following resolutions: 1. That in his death the church has lost one of her most worthy and faithful members. 2. That the community has sustained the irreparable in the loss of one of its most highly honored and respected citizens. 3. That we bow in humble submission to him who makes no mistakes and we sorrow not as those who are without hope. 4. That we extend to the family of our deceased brother our heartfelt sympathy in their great bereavement. “How blest the righteous when he dies.” When sinks a weary sold to rest! How mildly bean the closing eves! How gently heaves the expiring Breast!” J. M. Fleming, Pastor.
