He was twice married his first wife being Miss Ann Cornelia Warwick of Wishart’s Township, Robeson County. To this union were born eight children, all of whom survive except one, Miss Attie, who died several years ago. Just as she had stepped upon the threshold of young womanhood, displaying a bright promise of a useful life. The remaining ones are Mrs. J. P. McNeill and Mr. John Meares of Lumberton, Mrs. Luther Thompson, of the Long Branch section, Mrs. William P. Oliver of Marietta, Mrs. Will Riddle of St. Pauls, Mrs. Foster Graham of Florence S. C., and Mr. A. L. Meares of Richmod, Va. He waa married to Miss Lizzie Pridgen of Sampson county who survives. The connected himself with the Antioch Baptist Church at the age of sixteen, where he held the position of church clerk and deacon for many years until he removed to Lumberton to become surperintendent of the county home. His last active work was that of a rural mail carrier which he had to abandon a few years ago on account of failing health. For a long time he lingered and suffered, but resigned himself to his sufferings with the same Christian fortitude that characterized his entire life. He was a man-yes a man-with a beautiful character, gentl,e and pure as any woman. If fault he had could it be called a fault, his greatest one was he rwold give way to the claims of another, rather than stand for his own personal rights. Unflinching, unselfish and unflattering service to others was one of his highest aims in life. His most cherished happiness consisted in doing something to make some fallen or discouraged fellow being look up to see a ray of hope through the dim light of misfortune. His gentle spirit had gone from us forever her below. He has gone up higher, And oh, the meeting and greeting Over in the spirit land Where our dearest, who was nearest Will never give the parting hand. He is waiting, watching Over on the golden shore We shall meet him we shall meet him When the storms of life are o’re. Home supernal, joys eternal Just beyond the rolling tide No more sighing, no more dying Where the loved one now abides. J. A. B.
