John Oliver, a local deacon in the M. E. Church, South, was born in Moore county, N. C., January 4, 1784; came to Robeson county in 1805; was married to Miss Ann Grantham, and settled on Ashpole swamp, 20 miles south from Lumberton, in 1806, where they lived about 70 years; was licensed to exhort October 4th, 1812, and to preach March 15th, 1816; was ordained 1835, and died February 12th, 1879. His wife went before. They had raised seven sons and three daughters, but only three sons survive him now. There were about 50 grandchildren and about as many great-grandchild- ren when he died-nearly all the living that are old enough, are members of the church. In 1812 he paid two-thirds of the assessment of his church for support of the ministry, and now his family pay the same proportion of $200-the present assessment. He was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost. James J. Carden.
