FINAL RITES HELD FOR MRS. ELLA JANE PARNELL - Long-Time Faithful Member of Zion Hill Interred in Presence of Many Sorrowing Relatives and Friends – By J.M. Fleming Mrs. Ella Jane Parnell, 70 years old, died at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. Clarence Parnell of R.5 from Lumberton, with whom she lived, about 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 7. Funeral services were held from the residence at 3 p.m. Wednesday by her pastor, the writer, in the presence of quite a large number of friends, acquaintances and loved ones. Pallbearers were: Messrs. P.S. Kornegay, Hob Roberts, W.M. Bryant, Oakley Allen, Mark Pace, Carson Sessoms. The flowers were placed by Madams Hob Roberts, J.E. Hickman and J.A. Sessoms, Misses Thelma Smith and Ava Grey Sessoms. Interment was made in the family cemetery near Zion Hill church, of which she had been a long-time faithful member, when she was able to attend there. The choir was composed of Messrs. P.S. Kornegay, C.F. Mercer, Madams Grover Prink, Bob Bryant, J.M. Fleming, George M. Sessoms, who impressively sang, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Shall We Gather at the River?” Left to mourn her departure are the husband, Mr. Reuben Parnell; and 5 sons – Messrs. John Stan Bright, Ervin and Clarence; 2 daughters – Madams W.B. Kinlaw of Rt. 5, Lumberton, and Charlie Arnette of St. Pauls; Two daughters, aged 9 and 15, preceded their mother to the grave several years ago. I did not learn the number of grandchildren, but there is a goodly number of them. The best of all our earthly friends is our precious mother. How we miss her when she goes away to return no more!
