E.S. PATE – LARGE CROWD ATTENDS SERVICES AT PHILDELPHUS FOR PROMINENT COLUMBUS COUNTY WOMAN WHO DIED OF PNEUMONIA – HUSBAND ILL HERE WITH PNEUMONIA Funeral services were conducted from Philadelphus Presbyterian church Thursday at 6 p.m. for Mrs. E.S. Pate of Longwood, Columbus county, who died in a local hospital the afternoon before following an illness with pneumonia, lasting only since Sunday. Services were in charge of Rev. McInnis, pastor of Philadelphus Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the church cemetery. Mr. Pate, who holds a very responsible position with Jackson Bros. Lumber Co. at Longwood, became ill while attending the funeral of Mr. A.A. Thaggard on December 1, developing pneumonia. Mrs. Pate began nursing him and also developed pneumonia. They were both brought here to the hospital Sunday afternoon. Mr. Pate’s condition is improving. Deceased, who was 45 years of age, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Hail of Braxton. She is survived by her husband and one son; 3 sisters – Mrs. A.A. Thaggard of Pembroke, Mrs. Albert Baldwin of Clarkson and Mrs. A.M. Cooke of Jacksonville, Fla. She was a sister-in-law of Mr. B.A. McCormick of Pembroke. Her son, who is a student at Davidson college, arrived in Pembroke for the holidays about the time of his mother’s death. A large crowd was present for the last sad rites, many people coming from Longwood, Whiteville and other places where Mr. Pate had been working. There were many pretty flowers that banked the grave in the cemetery. Mrs. R.H. Livermore of Lumberton had charge of the floral offerings, being assisted by two Misses Hall and three Misses Baldwin, nieces of Mrs. Pate. Pallbearers were Mr. R.H. Livermore of Lumberton, Mr. Hugh Monroe of Pembroke, Messrs. R.H. Burns, R.C. Carson and Eugene Davis of Whiteville and Mr. Joe Baldwin of Charlotte.
