Mrs. Joanna Phillips
Aged “Mother in Israel” Passes Away at Home of Her Son-In-Law and Daughter Mrs.
J.D. Taylor in Emporia, Virginia—remains Interred in Wishart Township.

Mrs. Joanna Phillips, a mother in Israel, died at the home or her son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Taylor of Emporia, Va., at 11:30 p.m. October 24th,
and interment was made in the family cemetery in Wishart Township by the side of
her late husband, Mr. S.S. Phillips who died April 11, 1911. The funeral was
held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Barnes Monday afternoon the
26th, conducted by the Rev. E..A. Paul. 
Mrs. Phillips was before her marriage Miss Joanna Storm. She was born July 7th,
1833 and was there for 92 years, 3 months and 17 days old. She was one of the
best of women. 
She and Mr. Phillips were married May 8, 1860, and t them were born three
daughters and one son, Mrs. J.D. Taylor of Emporia, Va and Mrs. W.H. McDonald of
Hope Mills, are the only living ones. Mrs. Haywood Tyner is a foster daughter
and still survives. 
The funeral was largely attended by her numerous relatives and friends, and the
floral offerings were beautiful. 
Mrs. Phillips for many years during her earlier career was a professional school
teacher. It has been the writer’s pleasure to converse with several men and
women who were brought up at her feet. Everyone has given the same verdict—that
she was an amiable and excellent teacher. She insisted on thoroughness in
preparation, strictness and straightness in character and morals. 
In religion she was not puritanical or prudish, but pure and true. She hated
even the garment spotted by the flesh, and gave recognition to only to which she
knew was right and upright. The loss of such a mother is irreparable. She is not
replaced in a day or year.

daughter of Jordan Phillips and Hester Lee.
