Mr. Slate was born in Danville, Va., on April 18, 1833. He was 28 years old at the outbreak of the War Between the states and was already married. Seventy-nine years have passed since he was mustered out of the Confederate at the close of the war. He lived in Cumberland county for some time and moved to Robeson several years ago. When he was about 96 years of age, he was married to the former Annie G. Tyner, who survives. An only daughter an earlier marriage died some time ago and there are no grandchildren; so that he leaves no descendants. The funeral was to be held at 2 this afternoon at the home, with burial in the Christine cemetery on R. 2, Lumberton.
