A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Rowland Cemetery in Rowland, the Rev. David B. McGugan officiating. Stone, being raised in the McDonald area, attended Rowland Public Schools. He entered the United States Army in 1949, and served for three years, two months and 15 days. While in the Army, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was an active member of McDonald Baptist Church. In 1953, he married Norma McCullers of Red Springs. They remained married until her death in 1974. During their marriage they had three children, Sharon Stone McGirt of Charlotte, Donald Kevin Stone of Winchester, W.Va., and J. Keith Stone of Rocky Mount. In 1984, he married Eloise Day of Lumberton. They remained married until his death. Stone entered law enforcement with the Rowland Police Department in 1953. He was chief of police in Fair Bluff from 1954 until 1957. From there he served as a deputy sheriff from 1957 until 1978. In 1978 he was elected as the sheriff of Robeson County. He served that post until his retirement in 1994. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Albert Haynes and Brenda Hall Stone; two brothers, Albert Lindsey Stone and Billy Johnson Stone; and a sister, Margaret Stone Moody. In addition to being survived by his wife and children, he is also survived by a sister, Jean Stone Bailey of Charlotte; two brothers, Howard Badger Stone of Laurinburg, and Billy Johnson Stone of Rowland; four stepchildren; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren ; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Southeastern Hospice House, 1100 Pine Run Drive, Lumberton, N.C., 28358. Boles Funeral Home of Rowland is serving the family.
