C., Mr. Hugh Thompson, aged 68 years About 43 years ago, he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As a member of the Church, he was exemplary, and exhibited peculiar zeal in the cause of his Master. Sorely afflicted with rheumatism and deafness, he was often deprived of the privilege of attending the house of God, but he would encourage his family to attend. During his last illness he was unusually cheerful and resigned, frequently giving indication that he had the love of God in his heart, and a good hope of happiness beyond the grave. On the Sabbath before his death, when it was thought by those present, that he was about to die, he called his son, Rev. John E. Thompson, and taking his hand and placing it on his breast, requested him to repeal the Lord’s Prayer.- When he came to the words – Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, he shouted glory to God. He then requested his children to sing the hymn commencing. What sinners value I resign. He lingered until half past eight o’clock on Wednesday morning, when he fell asleep in Jesus. He leaves a wife and nine children, a father aged 91, and many other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. All his children are members of the Church – One of his sons is a minister of the N. C. Conference and three others fill official stations in the Church.
