JACKSON TOWNSEND TOWNSEND. – Rev. Jackson Townsend died at his home in Robeson Co., Jan. the 10th. The funeral services were conducted by the writer in Asbury church, of which he had long been an official member, on Tuesday, Jan. 11th. He was born Dec. 11th, 1822, and had just entered his 71st year. He was converted when a boy and joined the Methodist Church, and for over fifty years he has been a faithful servant of God. He served three years in the Confederate army as a private soldier in the company commanded by Capt. Moore, an honored and useful member of Asbury Church now. He was a true and brave soldier, and was once severely wounded. March 21st, 1850, he was married to Miss S. J. Thompson. She died May 17th, 1877. In June 1878 he married Miss S. M. Olive, who survives him. I think it was in 1866 he was licensed to preach, and up to two years ago he has been a very useful local preacher. Not strong in voice, but persuasive in manner, he preached the Gospel all over this country, and many will rise up and call him blessed “in that day.” He was not “slothful in business,” but made all things move in the line of success which he managed. Quiet and meek and gentle in spirit, hence a good father, husband, friend and neighbor. During my acquaintance with him his health was poor, and at times his suffering great. He bore all with patience, and murmured not. He was with God in joy or sorrow and whichever came it was to him just and good and he was the same submissive servant of Him who loved him. Not long ago he lost a precious son, and I shall not soon forget how he spoke to me of the sweet comfort his Saviour was. And now he is not, for God has taken him. And our fathers, where are they? He leaves eleven children to mourn his death. One son is an honored and useful member of W. N. C. Conference, Rev. F. L. Townsend. Truly they have lost a father, friend. May God bless the wife and all his children and guide each of you until you reach our Father’s House across whose threshold no shadows ever fall. N. M. Jurney.
