CHARLES TOWNSEND _____ One of County’s Oldest and Best Citizens Died Tuesday Night Near Tenmile Church – Funeral Yesterday Attended by Large Crowd. Mr. Charles Townsend, one of Robeson’s oldest and best citizens, died early Tuesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Florence Britt, near Ten Mile church. Deceased was about 72 years old and served through the Civil War, being in some of the hardest fought battles of the conflict. He is survived by four children: two daughters – Mrs. J. H. Powers and Mrs. Florence Britt – and two sons – Messrs. N. A. and J. I. Townsend – all of whom live in the Ten Mile section. One brother, Mr. William Townsend, three half-brothers – Messrs. F. F., Stephen and Joseph Townsend – and four half sisters – Mesdames W. C. Prevatt, E. W. Tyner, Stephen Davis and Mattie Britt – all of Robeson county, also survives. The funeral was conducted from Ten Mile Baptist church yesterday at 3 p. m. by Rev. J. M. Page, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. I. P. Hedgpeth of Lumberton. The pallbearers were Messrs. H. H. Stanley, Spurgeon Jones, E. C. Watson, Robert Pate, Frank Gough and D. M. Barker. Interment was made in the church cemetery. Beautiful floral offerings completely covered the grave. A large crowd of relatives and friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased. A large number from Lumberton attended the funeral. Deceased was well and favorably known. He had for many years been one of the leading spirits in the community in which he lived. He took active interest in the work of the church, having been a de[a]con of Ten Mile Baptist church for a long time. In the passing of Mr. Townsend the community in which he lived and the county at large lost a valued citizen. He will be missed in many ways. Additional Comments: Son of Alfred Townsend.
