The Wilmington Star of Friday has the following account of the death of Mr. Wiggs, who is known here: "Captain Alex. W. Wiggs, for many years and until the triumph of Republican a little more than a dozen years ago, connected with the police department of this city, passed away yesterday morning at 1:30 o’clock at the home of his nephew, Mr. S. J. Smith, at Ashpole, N. C. The remains were brought here on the afternoon train from the South yesterday and were laid to rest in the family lot in Bellvue cemetery, funeral services having been previously conducted at Ashpole. Capt. Wiggs was in the 73rd year of his age and resided in this city until about 1897 when he went to live with relatives in Robeson county. He had been connected with the police department every since just after the war and arose to the rank of captain, retiring from the service with honor and credit to himself and to the city. Many friends in this city remember him most favorably and will hear of his death with great regret. Of the immediate family, Capt. Wiggs is survived only by a sister, Mrs. Mary Smith, of Ashpole. Mr. Smith and a friend accompanied the remains to Wilmington yesterday."
