Willis _______ Funeral for Prominent Farmer from Home in Saddletree ________ Samuel Oliver Willis, 70, prominent farmer of the Saddletree section, near Lumberton, died at his home Saturday at 10 pm of a heart aliment which he had been ill since Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted from the home today at 10 a.m. by Rev Troy Jones, pastor of Rozier Baptist Church of which he was a member, assisted by Rev. Lee Humphrey, and internment was made in the Carlyle cemetery near there. A large crowd attended. Pallbearers were active: Tillman Willis, Robert Britt, Rozier Harrell, Claude Willis, all of the community. Merton Willis of Red Springs, John Archie Alphin of Fayetteville, all nephews; honorary—Dr. T.C. Johnson, Dr. F.B. McGrath, Dr. T.A. Norment, A. and Max Weinstein, W.C. Watts, A.M. Hartley, Haynes Collins, Walter Blackmon, Lacy Barnes, D. Marvin Barker, Wheeler Britt, A.R. Pittman, R.B. Tolar, D.C. Faulk, J. Paul Lewis, J.R. McLeod, L.J. Bullard, Alton Prevatte, D.R. Shaw, E.J. Britt, W.O. Thompson, Mark Page, W.C. Britt, all of Lumberton or vicinity, Dr. C.T. Poole and W.H. Howard of St. Pauls, F.C. Kite of Fayetteville, E.J. Chambers, Jesse Prevatt, S.J. Smith, Marshall Britt of Fairmont. Flower girls nieces were: Mrs. Osborne Carter and Miss Leona Alphin of Fayetteville, Mrs. Floyd Powers, Misses Mary Margaret, Annie Ruth, and Ernestine Willis of the community. Death of Mr. Willis came as a great shock to the community, in which he was greatly beloved and was considered an ardent Christian. He was a native of the community, son of the late Archie and Martha Carlyle Willis. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Laura Jane Rozier Willis; 8 children: W.A., E.J., R.W., Miss Hezzie Willis, Mmes. B.C. Britt and J.C. Collins of Lumberton, C.J. Willis of Laurinburg and Mrs. John Musselwhite of Fairmont; 3 brothers—S.A. and G.L. of Lumberton and John of Laurinburg; a sister –Mrs. Will Alphin of Fayetteville; 15 grandchildren. ********************************* The Robesonian, Lumberton, NC Wednesday April 13, 1938 Rites for S.O.
