oath of...." and then ordered to be registered; to eliminate redundancy, 
these have been abstracted simply as "acknowledged" or "proved

At a court called by the sheriff in the county of Robeson on friday the 
22nd day of May & 25th year of American Independence 1801 for the 
purpose of trying a negro man named Cezar the property of Cannon 
Cumboe on a complaint exhibited against him by John Peter Martin for 
takiing & stealing out of his poss[ess]ion two pair of shoe botts & one 
trunk containing sundry articles when the prisoner was brought into 
court & charged & plead not guilty & the following jury being impanelled 
& sworn to well and truly try the suit then depending between the state 
& Cezar the prisoner at the bar & a true verdict given according to their 
evidence / to wit / John Storm Isham Pitman Isaac Bird John Clibourn 
Wm Thompson William Normant Andrew Fulmore Benjamin Lee Wm 
Humphrey Henry Pope Thomas Sewell & Charles Bullock & the jury 
after hearing the witnesses for and against the prisoner on their oaths 
find him guilty agreeble to the above charge ordered that the sheriff 
take the prisoner to the publick whiping post & there give him thirty 
nine lashes on his bare back which was executed accordingly

At a county court of pleas and quarter sessions begun & held for the 
county of Robeson on monday the sixth day of July and twenty sixth 
year of American Independence AD 1801

Present the worshipful Joseph Wood Alexander Patterson & David 
Torry Esquires

The sheriff returned the venire facias from which the court selected the 
following gentlemen to attend as grand jurors during this term / to wit / 
Samuel Bridgers foreman Daniel Campbell Archibald McNeill John 
McEacharn William Regan Jacob Rhodes Henry Thompson Edward 
Campbell Jacob Pope Albritain Drake George Thompson Thomas 
Shanks Noah Pitman & John McNeill and John Blount constable sworn 
to attend them

Ordered that Nevan McBride be overseer of the road in room of 
Malcom Thompson

Ordered that Mary Bird guardian to William & Mary Bird sell the 
perishable property of William Bird deceased

Ordered that John Councills two hands work on the little marsh bridge 
as formerlly and that Hardy Councill Isom Councill John Johnston & 
Benjamin Lancaster work on the road under Nevan McBride overseer
