Wednesday April 6th 1803

Court met according to adjournment

Present the worshipful Robert Haills Joseph Regan & Joseph Wood 
Esquires

State vs. John Ivey The defendant charged and pleads not guilty, when 
the following jury was sworn to well and truly try this issue of travers / to 
wit / Samuel Smith John Clibourn William Thompson Andrew Sinclair 
Alexr McGeachy Malcom Murphey Thomas Shanks Danl McNeill Saml 
Willis Danl Matthews William Whealer & John Johnston their oaths find 
the Deft guilty when the court ordered the sheriff to take the said John 
Ivey to the publick whiping post and there give him ten lashes on the 
bear back which accordingly was executed

Ordered that Neill McGill Danl Buie John Buie Buies Jim John 
Campbell Moses & Aaron Oxendine work under Angus Black overseer 
of the road that leads from Lumberton to the raft swamp meeting 
house

Ordered that the sheriff summon the following gentlemen to attend as 
jurors at the next court / to wit / Alan Barnes William Barnes Wm 
Moore Junr William Odom Gilbert Sellers Lachlan Rea James Russel 
Jacob Rhodes Job Baxley Peter Smith / L. Bridge [/] John Pope Hector 
McNeill / Capt / Elisha Harrel Neill Murphey Neill Smith Nicholas 
McLachlan James McNeill Archibald Buie William Brewer Senr James

John Dow made it appear that he purchased from Robert Haills as 
Sheriff one hundred and twenty acres of land which was sold for the 
taxes thereof for the year 1797 also three town lots in the town of 
Lumberton / to wit / lot No. 71 - 39 & 107 the said Robert Haills now 
being out of office, ordered that Thomas Barnes the present sheriff 
make deeds to the said lands and town lotts

Deed from John Rowland to John Sterling acknowledged

Bill of sale from Jesse Barnes to Joab Willis for a Negro girl named 
Isabel proved by Josiah Barnes

Court adjourned untill tomorrow ten oclock
