m. Feb. 9, 1865, Kate Howard, Richmond, Va.
Entered C.S.A., 1863, serving until close of war;
since 1869 resident of Hanover Co., Va.;
practiced law there;
mem. Va. legislature, 1881-94;
presidential elector, 1884;
speaker house of delegates, 1887-94;
mem. comm'n with gov. and 5 others, chosen in 1889, who effected settlement of 
the public debt of Va., ratified by legislation, 1892;
chm'n (and prepared report) of joint com. that effected settlement of 
controversy between Va. and Md. in 1894, growing out of dispute over boundary 
line between the two States.
