An infant’s grave marker has been found dating to 1739 (twenty years before the church’s organization.) Many of the graves are unmarked, others are marked with fieldstones with no indication of the deceased’s name. Knowledgeable historians have estimated that there over one thousand graves. We do know that American and British soldiers were interred at Speedwell after the Revolutionary War as well as Union and Confederate soldier who fought in the Civil War. In addition, it was customary to bury slaves in a section of the graveyard—only one is so marked. The cemetery has several significant memorials dedicated to deceased soldiers, slaves and the unmarked graves. Among these are a handsome memorial stone to honor the unnamed decedents; an American flag to memorialize all soldiers from all wars; a stone to distinquish Speedwell as the oldest Presbyterian Church in Rockingham County; and a stone to honor Bristish and American soldiers who died at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse with hope for a peaceful and friendly relationship between the two nations. Aside from the memorials for deceased, a meditation garden is near the front entrance. A survey of the cemetery has yielded an alphabetical listing of the marked graves coded by location within the cemetery. The listing (with codes) follows this introduction.
