This Indenture made the [blank] day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & seventeen, between Elijah JOYCE, by his agent and attorney, James JOYCE, by power and authority duly authorized & hereto attached, of the one part, and Robert ALLEN of the county of Henry and State of Virginia of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said Elijah JOYCE by his attorney aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars, to him in hand paid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, for and in consideration of the further sum of forty eight dollars and sixty six cents , and of thirty dollars, secured to the said Elijah JOYCE; have bargained and sold, and by these presents doth bargain, sell, alien & confirm, to Robert ALLEN aforesaid, all the right, interest and claim which he the said Elijah JOYCE, now has, or hereafter may have to a certain tract or parcel of land, or to any part or parcel thereof lying and being in the county of Rockingham on the Waters of Dann & Mayo Rivers and in the fork of the said Rivers, it being a claim derived by the said Elijah JOYCE under the Will and Testament of Joseph T___ of the 3rd of March 1772, which bequeathed to Margaret JOYCE the said land for life, and afterwards to the Heirs of the body of the said Margaret, of whom the said Elijah JOYCE is one. - To have and to hold the said undivided right, interest, and claim, of and to the aforesaid land & premises, and the said Elijah JOYCE, doth for himself, his Heirs and Representative hereby forever warrant and defend the title interest & claim of him the said Elijah, to the undivided one tenth part thereof to the said Robert ALLEN, his heirs and Representative; free from the claim of the said Elijah JOYCE, his Heirs & Representative & free from the claim of all person or persons whatsoever. In Testimony whereof the said Elijah JOYCE, by his agent and attorney aforesaid, duly authorized as aforesaid, hath hereto set his hand & seal the day and date above mentioned.
