L. Rawley & others from P. B. Johnston Deed This Indenture made this second day of August in the Year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & seventy one between Pinckney B. Johnston of the county of Rockingham in the State of North Carolina of the first part, and Y. L. Rawley, R. A. Holderby, T. M. Johnston, Samuel Y. Walker, W. P. Robertson, John C. Soyar, W. J. Courts, W. D. Bethel, John Watkins, Trustees for the uses and purposes hereinafter mentioned, all of the county & State aforesaid of the second part - Witnesseth that the said P. B. Johnston of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid at and upon the sealing, and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath given, granted, bargained, sold, released, confirmed and conveyed and by these presents doth give, grant, bargain, sell, release, confirm and convey unto them Y. L. Rawley, R. A. Holderby, T. M. Johnston, S. Y. Walker, W. P. Robertson, J. C. Soyar, W. J. Courts, W. D. Bethel, J. Watkins parties of the second part, Trustees in trust, for the uses and purposes hereinafter mentioned and disclosed, all the estate, right, title, interest, property, claim and demand whatsoever either in law, or Equity, which he, the said P. B. Johnston hath in, to or upon all and singular a certain lot or piece of Land, situate, lying and being in the Town of Ruffin and County of Rockingham in the State of North Carolina, bounded and abutted as follows; to wit: Beginning at stone on main road leading from Ruffin to Reidsville, thence North 30 degrees west six and one half poles to Rail Road lands, North 60 degrees East three poles ten links, thence South 30 degrees West [sic - east?] six & 1/2 poles, So. 60 degrees W 3 poles, 10 links to beginning, laid out for and containing 107/635 of an acre together with all and singular, the houses, woods, waters, ways, privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging or any wise pertaining: To have and to hold all and singular the above mentioned and described lot or piece of Land, situate lying & being as aforesaid, together with all and singular the houses, woods, waters, ways, privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging or in anywise appertaining, unto them the parties of the second part, and their successors in office in trust; That they shall erect and build or cause to be erected and built thereon a two-story House, to be held in trust jointly for the use of the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South; according to the rules and discipline which from time to time may be agreed upon by the ministers and members of the said Church at their General Conferences; and by the Free and accepted York Masons as directed by the Grand Lodge of Free and accepted Masons in North Carolina. And as for the Trust and confidence, that they shall at all times forever and hereafter permit the Ministers and Preachers of the said M. E. Church South regularly authorized to preach and expound God's word in said house, and to permit the said Preachers & Ministers to have the entire occupancy of the first Story of said house as authorized by the General & Annual Conferences of said Church and to permit the Free Masons under the direction of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina all times forever hereafter to have the sole or entire occupancy of the second Story of said house, and to have free access at all times forever hereafter to the said second Story. And the said P. B. Johnston doth by these presents warrant and defend all and singular the before mentioned and described lot or piece of land with appurtenances thereto belonging unto them the said party [sic] of the second part, and their successors in office, from the claim or claims of the said P. B. Johnston his heirs and assigns and from the claim or claims of all persons Whatever ~ In testimony whereof the said P. B. Johnston hath set his hand & seal the day & date aforesaid. P. B. Rawley, R. A. Holderby, T. M. Johnston, Samuel Y. Walker, Wm. P. Robertson, John C. Soyar, W. J. Courts, W. D. Bethel, & John Watkins, was this the 4th day of September A. D. 1871 proved before the undersigned Judge of Probate for said County by the oath and examination of John H.
