SHARP ISHAM (sic) from SMITH JOSHUA     D  100 ac
        This Indenture made this 23d day of May in the year of our Lord one
thousand Seven hundred and ninety Six between Joshua SMITH of the County of
Rockingham & State of North Carolina of the one part & James SHARP of the
County & State aforesaid of the other part.  Witnesseth that the said Joshua
Smith for & in consideration of forty pounds current money to him in hand
paid by the said James Sharp, the receipt whereof the said Joshua Smith doth
hereby acknowledge and himself therewith fully satisfied contended & paid
hath granted bargained & sold and by these presents doth grant bargain sell
alien release and confirm unto the said James Sharp his heirs & assigns
forever one certain tract or parcel of land situate in the County of
Rockingham in the State of No. Carolina & on the branches of MAYO RIVER,
which land to wit: Beginning at a post oak Thomas JOYCEs line, running
thence West eighty poles to a pine, thence South forty poles to a pine,
thence West Sixty six poles to a black oak in James SCALESes line, thence
North on his line crossing a branch two hundred & fifty eight & half poles
to Scales corner Spanish Oak thence East thirty seven poles to post oak,
thence South crossing two branches on said James SHARPs own line one hundred
& seventy poles to pine, thence East on his own line one hundred and nine
poles to Thomas Joyces corner white  oak, thence South on Joyces line forty
eight and a half poles to the first Station, Containing one hundred acres
together with all houses orchards gardens fences, wood, underwoods, water &
water courses thereon standing growing and being with all other profits
commodities advantages and appurtenances to the Same belonging or anywise
appertaining, as also the remainder and remainders, reversion and reversions
thereof & of every part & parcel thereof To have and to hold the said tract
of land with all & Singular the appurtenances to the only proper use and
behoof of him the said James Sharp his heirs and assigns and the said Joshua
Smith for himself & his heirs the said land and premises with all and
singular the appurtenances unto the said James Sharp his heirs and assigns
shall and will warrant & forever defend by these presents against all person
or persons having and lawfully claiming any right or title in or to the same
or any part or parcel thereof and the said Joshua Smith for himself and his
heirs doth grant covenant and agree to & with the said James Sharp his heirs
and assigns in manner and form following Viz that he the said Joshua Smith
at the time of the Sealing and delivery of these presents is & stands seized
of an indefensible estate of and in the premises & that he hath a good &
lawfull authority to Sell & Convey in manner & form aforesaid & that the
same shall forever remain to the said James Sharp his heirs and assigns
freely clearly exonerated & discharged of and from all manner of other forms
bargains sales titles of dowry and all other rights and Estates whatsoever
In witness whereof the Said Joshua Smith hath hereunto set his hand &
affixed his Seal the Day and Year first above written.
