Jones To June Jones, 1863 May the 11 in 1863 Dear Sister I will write you a few lines as I am writing for Turner. I can say to you that I am not very well at this time nor haven't been since the battle for we had to lay in line of battle for nine days and it was raining part of the time very hard. I received a hole in my pants just above the ankle which was supposed to be a musket ball but did not hit me anyway. I would be glad to know what ring that fuss was kicked up about write to me what ring it was and I will rectify it in my next letter so write soon direct your letters to Fredericksburg Va. in care of Capt Pfhol Co L 21 reg of N Troops. So I remain your Brother till death Robert Small To Jane Jones Camp near Fredericksburg, Va. May the 11 in 1863 Dear Wife I this evening seat my self to write you a few lines to let you no that I am not very well at this time but I hope this will reach you safe and find you and the children in good health. I can say to you that we have had a hard battle here at this place it continued 8 days very hard fighting all the time own losses great but the Enemy was still greater losses of own Regt was Killed and wounded was one hundred and Thirty and two missing we expect (illegible) and I can say to you that General Jackson is dead he died yesterday evening with pneumonia he way wounded in the arm on the field it was done by his own men by not knowing who he was we have had a desperate time her we have got back to our old camp you said in Robt letter that you had got the rings that I sent to you I sent you 25 dollars in letters and you never said whether you got it or not it was in two different letters fifteen dollars in one and ten in the other I hope it has reached you by this time I started you a letter the other day and a ring in it with may name on it Bob got a letter this evening dated the 28th of April which Said his money all went safe to home and Bob got a letter yesterday you Said in your letter that Martha was coming to live with you and I was glad to hear it that she was coming to live with you I will Send you some papers in a few days to write on I was glad to hear you had got the rings you wrote that you got the (eligible) I was glad to hear it tell Father's family I think they think a heap of me for they have not written to me I Send you all my love and respects and give all of your fathers family my best respects I would be glad to See you all but I cannot say when I will tell aunt Betty Miller that George is well give Nathaniel Smalls family my best respects so write soon fail not. So nothing more this time only remains your husband until death T Jones To Jane Jones Additional Comments: Robert Small wrote this letter to his sister Jane for her husband Turner Jones. It was written just after the battle at Chancellorsville, Virginia while both men were members of Co. L, 21st N.C. Infantry. Robert Small had been severely injured in a fall from a railroad car in Aug. 1862 and received a disability discharge Aug. 1863. He re-enlisted in Co. H of the 45th N.C. Infantry Regt. in March 1864 and was paroled at Appomattox C.H. April 9, 1865. His brother-in-law, Turner died of disease seven months after this letter was written in Kinston N.C. Robert, Jane and Nathaniel were children of James David Small Jr. of Rockingham Co. Nathaniel was wounded at Cold Harbor, Va. in 1864. He was captured near Petersburg, Va. April 1865 and was released from Point Lookout, Md. POW Camp in June of 1865.
