Pension Application Of James Oliver, Natl Archives Microseries M805, Roll __, Application #W5444
Rockingham County, North Carolina, March 30, 1852, Peter Oliver, aged 82 
years: “That his brother, James Oliver was drafted about the last of the year, 
1780, in the services of the United States against Great Britain, in a company 
commanded, he thinks, by Captain Isaiah Gates, under the command of Colonel 
James Martin. He was present when his brother, the said James Oliver entered 
the service. Thinks he served about 6 months and has often heard old 
Revolutionary soldiers that are now dead, speak of being with said Oliver in 
the service. He states that his brother, James Oliver was in the service when 
the battle of Guilford was fought, and thinks that he was discharged from 
service  in the County of Guilford.”

“That his brother, about the year 1782, married Susannah Lemons who is now 
living a widow. He did not see them married, as he was married from home, but 
he saw his brother, said Oliver when he left home to get married and saw them 
both the next day when they returned to his father’s as man and wife. That the 
said James Oliver died on the 8th day of February, 1840 and that he was present 
and saw him buried.”

	The widow said she was married to James Oliver in Rockingham County by 
George Peay, justice of the peace. She stated that her husband “never applied 
for or received any pension for his services from the fact he stated to her 
that he was able to live without, and that he was no scholar, and that it would 
be attended with a good deal of trouble.”
