Today Eli Chatham and a man named Mays, two well diggers, became involved in a
quarrel, which will probably result fatally for Chatham. Mays first tried to
shoot Chatham and failing in this he picked up a chop-axe and struck Chatham a
blow across the face, inflicting a terrible wound. Physicians were summoned at
once and are doing all they can for Chatham, but his recovery is doubtful. Mays
was placed under arrest.

(Apparently Eli Chatham survived and was living in the 1900 census in Reidsville
Township.)
