He was the son of George Washington Sharp, Sr. and Sarah Catharine “Caty” Keck. He first married Mary Jane Tickle and then, married Mary Ann McBryde, after his first wife’s death. He had a total of 11 children. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army, September 1, 1862. He was wounder on July 2, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA and was held as a Prisoner of War until October of that year. The following is a word for word (well almost) copy of an article written by one of George's grandson's about him, at the time of his death. A BRAVE OLD SOLDIER DEAD Mr. Geo. V. Sharp, of New Bethel, Gone to his Reward (The following item should by all means have appeared in our last week's issue, but through some unaccountable mistake was omitted. We are sorry for it, and take this method of expressing our regret. - Ed.) Nov. the 30th about 2 o'clock, a. m., the death angel visited our community and carried from our midst Mr. Geo. V. Sharp. He was born September 7th, 1828, and was therefore over 80 years old. He is survived by two brothers and three sisters, as follows: Wm a. Sharp, and H. J. Sharp, and Mesdames G. W. Suits, Andy Barham and P. S. Dixon. He was the farther of 11 children. Two have preceded him to the great beyond, nine being left to mourn their loss. he left 53 grand children and 32 great grand children and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Sharp was one among the Confederate soldiers who went fartherest to the front at Gettysburg, and was always proud of it. In that battle he was shot through the heel and had been a cripple ever since. The past few years he had suffered intensely from the effect of the wound. He was a faithful and ardent Democrat for 59 years, being as loyal in the dark hours of defeat as when Democracy ruled. One by one those who fought so valiantly for the Lost Cause are passing into eternity. We hope to meet them some sweet day in a home where defeat is unknown. A Grandson. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
