Matthias Sides and Sarah Bost - Rowan County, NC - Bios Submitted for use in the USGenWeb Project Archives by Olin & Barb Clayton Sides/Bost Genealogy Matthias Sides and Sarah Bost were married 06 March 1843 in Rowan County, N.C. Matthias Sides was born in Stanley County, N.C. 15 June 1821. In approximately 1848, Matthias and Sarah (Sides) Bost settled in Lipe Settlement, in Montgomery County, Il and farmed for a living. From that time until his death Mr. Sides was a resident of Montgomery County, Il and for several years in the late 1850's, he along with Solomon Smith as a partner, operated the first grist mill established in Nokomis, Montgomery County, Il. It was located on Pine Street, between State Street and the railroad, about where the post office stood in 1899. In 1860 the mill was burned and immediately after the fire Mr. Sides' partner Solomon Smith disappeared and Mr. Sides was compelled to meet the debts of the firm alone, which left him almost destitude. Taking up farming again, by hard work and economy he accumulated considerable property, which, he divided among his children, retaining sufficient to provide for himself and wife. When 23 years old he joined the Lutheran Church and was a member of the Methodist Church in Nokomis, Il. At the time of his death in 1899, Mr. Sides was probably the oldest settler in Montgomery County, Il. Matthias and Sarah (Bost) Sides were parents of twelve children, eleven of whom survived, along with his widow in 1899. Their children were Mrs. Flora Robertson, William E. Sides, Adolphus Sides, Mrs. Lucinda Kerr, Mrs. William Montgomery Gage, Daniel Sides, Emmanuel Sides, Mrs. Ida Deal, Mrs. Laura Raymer, Mrs. Nettie Isaacs and Emerson Sides. William Sides, son of Matthias and Sarah (Bost) Sides served in the Civil War with Company C, 143rd Illinois Infantry and is buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. Mary Melissa Sides, daughter of Matthias and Sarah (Bost) Sides married William Montgomery Gage. William Montgomery Gage's great grandfather Pvt. Walter and great, great grandfather Captain William Montgomery Gage served in the Rev. War. See DAR National #0784871, which belongs to Belinda Clayton, the 7th great grandaughter of Captain William Montgomery Gage. Mary Melissa (Sides) Gage and her husband William are buried in Nokomis Cemetery, in Nokomis, Montgomery County, Il, but no stone graces their resting place. Their son Curtis Burwell Gage tragically drowned at 17 yrs of age in 1911 and he also has no stone. Lulu Luetta Gage, daughter of William and Mary Melissa (Sides) Gage married Warren Franklin Hulbert. They were both born in Montgomery County, Il and both died there and are buried in Nokomis Cemetery. The Hulbert/Hurlbut Genealogy dates back to the 1500's in England and their soon will be a complete set of records on this lineage available at the Nokomis Library. Suavilla Isadora Hulbert, daughter of Warren Franklin and Lulu (Gage) Hulbert married Charles Leo Clayton in 1921 in Montgomery County, Il. The Clayton ancestry is available at the Nokomis Library and dates back to the 1850's in England. Both Suavilla and Charles Leo Clayton were born in Montgomery County, Il, Leo died in Montgomery County, but Suavilla died of a massive coronary in 1970 in Shelby County, Il. Dale Everett Clayton, son of Charles Leo and Suavilla Isadora (Hulbert) Clayton married Lavonne Armentrout in 1945 in Montgomery County, Il. The Armentrout History is on file at the Nokomis Library in Nokomis, Il and dates back to the 1700's in Germany. Both Dale and Lavonne Clayton were born in Montgomery County, Il and still reside there. Olin Dale Clayton, son of Dale and Lavonne (Armentrout) Clayton was born in 1951 in Montgomery County, Il and married Barbara Hays on 03 August 1976 in Montgomery County, Il. The Hays Ancestry is on file in the Nokomis Library dating back to the 1700's in North Carolina at present. Family thought to be of Scottish origin. Both Olin and Barb (Hays) Clayton currently reside in Raymond, Il, as of Jan. 1999.
