Rowan County, NC - Richard Smith & Descendants ~~~~~~~~~~ RICHARD SMITH & DESCENDANTS It is believed that Richard Smith entered Rowan County, N. C. from the north; either Virginia or Maryland. He was titled by deed, 540 acres of land from a Mr. McCulloh on May 3, 1763. This land is located in what is known now as Atwell Township. The original titled showed Tract 9, crossing at fork of Pott's Creek. The deed was witnessed by Griffeth Rutherford & John Frohock. Richard had the following children; sons, Hiram, William and daughters Lena and Polly. The name of the wife of Richard is not known. Hiram inherited all the land of his father and his "brandy" horse. William received the sum of $5.00. Hiram, Lena and Polly divided the house and furniture. This is shown in Richard's will which was dated May 24, 1841 and named Richard Elliote as executor. Hiram bought additional land from Lock Atwell on July 30, 1834. This land was bounded by Sils Creek and the property of Richard Smith & George Templeton and was a total of 84 acres. Hiram Smith married Catherine Overcash on June 7, 1825. They had the following children: John J. (b 1832 - d 1936), Elisabeth (b 1834), Hiram (b 1836), Washington P. (b 1838), William (b 1840), Margaret (b 1842), Mary Ann (b 1846) and Caroline B. (b 1847). Mary Ann Smith had two sons; John William and Frank. John William was born May 15, 1867 and was the son of I. Loveless according to baptismal records from Concordia Lutheran Church. Frank was born Feb, 11, 1876 and was the son of Frank Overcash according to the same source. John William Smith and Frank Smith were baptized on June 3, 1883 at Concordia Lutheran Church as noted by church records. "Granny", as Mary Ann was known to the family, died June 25, 1927 of pneumonia and is buried at Centenary Methodist Church in Rowan County, N.C. John William married Lula Victoria Christie and they bore the following children: John Edgar (b 3-14-1896 - d 1-20-1968), Charlie Lee (b 6-3-1892 - d 4-22-1987), Robert Franklin (b 9-14-1893 - d 3-31-1981), Mary (b 4-12-1896 - d 1-21-1986), Margaret Elizabeth (b 5-15-1897 - d 5-02- 1978), Janie Clercy (b 2-18-1899 - d 10-24-1981), and Henry Clinton (b 9- 20-1902 - living this date). Mary Ann moved in with her son John William and helped rear his children after the death of Lula Victoria on Jan 01, 1902. They lived in Mooresville, N.C. at this time, but John William bought a farm in Enochville community where he and the family farmed. The grandchildren enjoyed picking Chinquapins and mulberries on this farm. The Chinquapin is a small chestnut that grows wild in burrs. They were picked, boiled and strung on thread and worn for beads. John Edgar Smith married Lottie Lipe and had Ethel and Hubert. Charlie Lee Smith married Dora Mae Fulham and had Bertie Lodeamer, Mable Lucille, Daniel Lee and Ralph Erskine. Dora Mae Fulham died of a heart attack on April 20, 1923. Charlie Lee remarried on Sept. 5, 1925 to Chloie Lee Knight, originally of Natchez, Mississippi. She bore Charlie Lee Smith, Jr. but died from complications caused by the birth. Charlie Lee later married Essie Mae Upright on Dec. 22, 1945. Robert Franklin Smith married Grace Honbarger on May 27, 1916. They had Katherine, Lucile, Addie Mae, Hazel Elizabeth, Maddie Josephine, Betty Ann, Brittie Irene and Leonard Willis. Robert Franklin was blinded due to an operation to remove a brain tumor in 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland. Mary Smith married Charles Clinton Goodman and had Luther, Dorothy and Cliford. Margaret Elizabeth Smith married Rufus Bostian and had Velma, Ruthy, Audry, Mitchell and one still born child. Janie Clercy Smith married Jes A. Honbarger and had Charlie Lee, Oscar, Jerry, Henry Alfred, Norman, Carl, Pearl, Edith, Pauline and Ruby. Henry Clinton Smith married Aley Daniels and had William, Leroy, Fred, Mary, Della Mae, Lester, James, Jay Harold and one still born son. After the death of Aley, he married Lettie Hill and had no further issue.
