Rowan County 23rd April, A.D. 1844
This day personally appeared James Ellis, late a slave of Mrs. Margaret Ellis 
and Elizabeth Washington, late a slave of George Washington, who acknowledge 
that they have been cohabiting as man and wife since the 11th day of August, 
A.D. 1842 and wish to continue as such.
