Sealed with our Seals, and dated this the 7th day of August Anno Domini, 1854. THE CONDITION OF THE ABOVE OBLIGATION IS SUCH: That if the above bounden PAUL SAFRIT, the reputed father of a Base-born child begot on the body of MARGARET CARTNER, a single woman of said County, shall keep the said County of Rowan indemnified from all cost in and about the maintenance of said child; and perform every order of said County, relative to the said child; then this obligation to be void; otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Paul Safrit (Seal) Peter (his+mark) Safrit (Seal) SIGNED, SEALED, AND DELIVERED IN THE PRESENCE OF James E Kerr Additional Comments: Paul Safrit/Safret was the son of Peter Safrit and Catherine Bostian of Rowan County, North Carolina. Paul was born about 1830 in North Carolina and died of disease on November 16, 1862 in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia during the Civil War. Paul’s Civil War records have him listed as Powell Safrit. He enlisted as a private in Company H, 5th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on August 8, 1862. His brother, William Carson Safrit/Safret, enlisted in the same Company/Regiment. William survived. Paul’s two youngest brothers, Peter Anderson Safrit/Safrit and James Anderson Safrit/Safret, also fought in the Civil War. James Anderson also died in Virginia. Paul Safrit/Safret had three additional siblings, brother Charles Safrit and sisters, Clara “Ann/Annie” Safrit (wife of Abner Cartner) and Ester “Caroline” Safrit (wife of W.T. Donahue). Paul Safrit and Margaret Cartner were the parents of Henry Carter/Cartner? Safrit/Safret (b. Aug. 1854; d. July 8, 1928, Cabarrus County, NC). It is not known whether they married after the birth of Henry. Paul Safrit married Margaret Pence, daughter of Henry H. Pence and Eliza Litaker, on November 23, 1854 in Davie County, North Carolina. Paul and Margaret (nee Pence) Safrit/Safret had two daughters, Sarah "Jane" Safret (b. 1858; d before 1930, Dyer County, TN), and Julia Ann Safrit/Safret (b. May 14, 1861; d.
