Rowan County, NC - Thomas Bell Revolutionary War Pension ~~~~~~~~~~ May 29, 1933 Mrs. W.H. Hunnaly Monroe, Georgia Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request information relative to Thomas Bell of Iredell County, North Carolina, a soldier of the War of the Revolution. The data furnished herein were obtained from the papers on file in pension claim R.720 based upon the Revolutionary War service of Thomas Bell. The date and place of his birth are not stated nor are the names of his parents shown. Thomas Bell, while a resident of Rowan (later Iredell) County, North Carolina, was a wagoner (drove his own team) under Captain Caldwell from February 26, 1778 until March 21, 1778; served three months in Captain Headon's Company, Colonel William Lofton's North Carolina Regiment, and was discharged December 4, 1781. It was stated that he served on various other tours. Thomas Bell married in 1783 or 1786, Jane McGuire, the daughter of Timothy McGuire. Thomas Bell and Jane McGuire were both then of Iredell County. He died in Iredell County February 14, 1825 aged about seventy years and his widow, Jane Bell, died in same county November 1, 1843. The date of her birth is not given, nor is the name of her mother shown. The following children survived their mother: John Carson Bell, aged forty-seven years in 1846 and a resident of Rowan County, North Carolina John A. Bell Cynthia Bell Jane or Jenny Bell Mary Bell It was stated in 1846 that other children were then dead, no names given. John Carson Bell applied for the pension that might have been due his mother, in behalf of himself and the other surviving children. The claim was not allowed as proof of six months service, as required by the pension law, was not established. Very truly yours, A.D.
