The Semi-Weekly Messenger (Wilmington NC) December 7, 1897
Statesville Landmark: Gilmore Hammond, who was tried in Salisbury for the murder
of "Red" Averitt, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to two years in
the penitentiary. The murder occurred only a few weeks ago.
