C. LETTER FROM ROWAN To the Editor of The Landmark I am no letter writer by any means but thought, as I never saw anything in The Landmark from Mount Vernon I would endeavor to give you a few items. We are having very dry weather and the farmers have sowed very little wheat as yet, on account of the ground being so dry and hard they could not plow. Very little corn gathered yet, though some of the farmers have commenced to gather. The general health of the vicinity is very good. DR. J. G. RAMSEY was taken sick last Thursday and has been confined to his bed most of the time since, though he is improving. "Jack Frost" has cut some tobacco and the tobacco raisers are now finishing up what he left. Messrs. KINCAID Bros. are sawing lumber, spokes and shuttle-blocks, etc. they are energetic young men and we need more like them in our country. Some time ago they sawed 4,299 feet of lumber in one day and were bothered some at that. The Mt. Vernon Reading Club met and reorganized on the night of the 2nd this month and met again last Friday night. The young people don't seem to take the interest they should, though those who have joined seem to "mean business." At the last meeting MR. E. B. RAMSAY made a speech on the manner in which a club should be conducted, which if they go by they will be sure to succeed. MR. H. H. FLEMING also made a few remarks which were very appropriate. MR. HENRY KIMBALL who has living at Omega during the past two years has moved to Third Creek. Mr. Kimball is a good man and a good neighbor and our people will miss him in the Sabbath school at the school house. One night last week some rogues broke into ANDERSON LUCKEY'S wheat house and were measuring up wheat when Mr. Luckey heard them and got his revolver and went to the wheat house door, which excited the rogue's so badly that they rushed out the door knocking Mr. Luckey down and running over him. One night since then they carried off some of his meat. They ought to be caught and sent to work. MR. W. W. FARLEY is going to build a new residence -- already had some of the lumber sawed at Kincaid's mill. MR. THOMAS NIBLOCK is having repairing done on his house. MR. DAVID FLEMMING is having an L built to his house. He also has his fall and winter stock of goods on hand and takes great pride in showing them to his customers. Some of our young people went to the camp-meeting at Harmony Hill last Sunday. Very little said about politics as yet and it's not much use in talking, for the most of our people are Democrats, woof and ward. Success to The Landmark, may it live long is the wish of TOPSY TURVE Mt. Vernon, N. C.
