Obit of Mary Reed Frost Rollin DeFrees, 1895 Submitted by Bev Schonewolf <4bevswolf@mail2.lcia.com> obituary published in the "Middlebury Independent" (Indiana) Death of Mrs. Mary DeFrees, at the ripe old age of 92 (18 December 1895) Mrs. Mary DeFrees, relict of James Defrees, and among our earliest settlers, died Sunday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Jonathan Mather. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 10 o'clock, a.m., by Rev. W.D. Smith at the home of Mrs. Mather. The remains were taken to Goshen where at 1 o'clock p.m.., the internment took place in Oak Ridge Cemetery, by the side of her husband. Mary Reed Frost was born November 1, 1803 in Rowan County, North Carolina. When about two years old she removed with her parents to Miami County, Ohio, where they settled about three miles from the present site of the city of Piqua. She was married August 16th, 1819, to Joseph Rollin, who left her a widow March 24th, 1828. By him she became the mother of four children all of whom but one died in childhood. November 13th, 1831 she married James Defrees, then of Piqua, Ohio, and with him in 1835 removed to Elkhart County, Indiana, settling on a farm in Jefferson Township. Her husband had nine children by a former wife, and by this marriage there were born four children, and to this family of thirteen she was a careful and loving mother. Mr. Defrees died December 8, 1847, leaving her again a widow. Of the family six yet survive, Mr. Anthony Defrees of Goshen, Mr, William DeFrees of San Francisco, Margaret, widow of James Smith of Florida, Caroline, widow of the late Judge James S. Fraser of Warsaw, Mr. Rollin DeFrees of Indianapolis, and Frances, wife of Mr. Jonathan Mather of Middlebury.
