HESS Died of Self-Inflicted Wound By Pistol Funeral services for William F. Hess, who died Tuesday night about 7:45 o'clock from self-inflicted injuries, will be held from the home at 115 East Henderson street Thursday at 4 o'clock with the Reverend J.R. Warren, pastor of the North Main Methodist church of which the deceased was a member. Interment will follow in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Mr. Hess shot himself through the heart with a .41 caliber pistol, said borrowed. The tradgedy occured at the rear of Henderson School. He had just left the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Hess, who lives nearby. She heard the shot and she and her husband investigated to find Mr. Hess dead. The deceased had laid his coat, hat and walking cane on a nearby porch floor. On his hat he had left a note in which he said he was no longer able to work becasue of his health, directed that the paymaster at Spencer give his check to his wife, and also asked that his bonus be turned over to his wife. "I am tired and am now going to rest," the note concluded. The pistol had evidently snapped once, as a bullet inside the chamber indicated. The bullet that claimed his life went through his body and came out to the right of the spine. Mr. Hess has been employed at the Spencer shops in the car repair department for over 30 years. Members of the organization will act as pallbearers. In addtion to his widow, he leaves two sisters and three brothers, these being: Luther Hess, of Faith; Thomas Hess of Concord; John Hess of this city; Mrs. gnes Ridolin, of China Grove; Mrs. Alice Winecoff, of this county. He also leaves one son, Floyd Hess, of Rock Hill, by a former marriage; and the following children from his second union: Mrs. E.L. Hess, L. Glenn Hess, Mrs. Bernard Morton, David and Mack Hess, all of this city: and Mrs. Orlin P. Shuping, of the county. He is further survived by 19 grandchildren. Coroner Dr. Walter L. Tattum and Capt.
