Mr. M.L. Holmes, one of Salisbury's oldest citizens, died yesterday afternoon, 
of paralysis of the heart. Mr. Holmes was 72 years old. He went to his office 
yesterday morning in apparently good health, when he was suddenly attacked by 
his fatal illness. Mr. Holmes was one of the best men of Salisbury, and was 
held in high esteem, not only by the people of Salisbury, but of all Rowan 
county. He was a generous, liberal spirited man, and his death is regarded by 
the people of Salisbury as nothing short of a public calamity.
