DR. SAMUEL McCORKLE, in the 65th year of his age. He was a native of the United States, and graduated at Princeton College in the year 1774; at which place the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him twenty years afterwards. In the year 1775 he settled as Pastor in the Presbyterian Church of Thyatira, where he continued to officiate with great respectability and usefulness, until about five years ago, when a stroke of palsey deprived that congregation of his services. He was a Trustee of the University from the commencement of that institution; and about the year 1795, the Board, sensible of his worth, offered him the professorship of Moral and Political Philosophy, but the inconvenience of moving with a large family, and a reluctance to separate from his congregation to which he had so long been united induced him to decline acceptance of that appointment. As a minister of the gospel, he was pious, learned and exemplary.
