Salisbury, Jan. 12 - Maj. Preston H. Smith died at his home in this city last 
night after having been afflicted for several years with spinal trouble, 
complicated with other complaints. Major Smith was born in Anson County in 
1834. He served in the cavalry under Gen. Rufus Barringer throughout the civil 
war. In 1866 he was married to Miss Susan Cole. She and three children - Mrs. 
W.A. Winborn of Savannah, and Misses Mary and Sallie Smith, survive him. Major 
Smith had many friends to regret his death.
