Salisbury, May 2 - A romantic marriage, in which a Salisbury young man took an active part, has recently been made public here, Mr. Robt. L. Farris, baggage agent for the Richmond & Danville Railroad at this place, who was supposed to be fancy free, is the gentleman married. The report of his marriage has been current for several weeks and today your correspondent interviewed him on the subject. He corroborated the report and gave a statement as follows: He was married to Miss Mamie Lynch, of Jersey City, NJ, on Sunday night, the 21st of April, 1893. The ceremony was performed at 10:30 o'clock by a Jersey City clergyman and was witnessed by three other persons. Immediately after the ceremony, to allay suspicion and that the marriage be kept secret, Mr. Farris crossed over to New York city and the young bride returned to her home. Spending the night in New York, Mr. Farris started for his home in Salisbury Monday afternoon. At the Jersey City depot he was met by his wife, accompanied by her sister, and spent one hour with her while waiting for his train, this being the only time spent with her since the marriage vows were taken. Bidding her adieu, he came on home, went back to his work and for more than a year has not seen her. The people with whom he worked and moved never suspected that he was married. None but his family and a few close friends were told of the clandestine marriage and they could hardly credit the story. Several weeks ago Miss Annie Lynch, his wife's sister, paid a visit here, when their friendly and sisterly relation made it necessary to divulge the secret. The story and circumstances of their meeting and engagement are about as romantic as were their marriage and subsequent living so far distant from each other. Miss Lynch spent several years here with her uncle, Mr. J.H. Buis, and Mr. Farris saw her occasionally in passing but never met her. After her return to Jersey City he wrote her and requested correspondence, which was granted and kept up for about two years. During this time many messages were sent, mutual vows were made and an engagement effected. In April, 1893, he secured a leave of absence from the railroad company and paid her a visit, meeting and marrying her within a few days. Since the marriage has been made known, Mr. Farris and wife have decided to go to housekeeping. He expects her here in June when they will begin life's journey together. Mr. Farris is about 25 years of age and Miss Lynch, about 18 years old.
